In a course called UWL 100 we used Facebook for a group project. UWL 100 has a number of themes and we were looking for a way to tie those themes together for a final discussion. We created a course facebook group. We asked the students to complete a photo scavenger hunt and upload it to the course facebook group. We do have a webbased course management systems at our university but photos are much easier to share on facebook. The assignment was as follows:

I have not yet used this toolfor class but I am thinking about doing so. Some of my colleagues have noted that it seems that students have been less likely to ...check their e-mail in recent semesters. Students do seem to be on facebook more often but maintaining a class management system and e-mail in addition to a facebook group for each class can be a lot of work. One solution might be to ask students to track all of thier online networks through one place. Either Disby or Delicious would work for this.

Text:I use YouTube or Ustream in all of my classes - both online and face-to-face. As a political science and policy professor I like to use this toolshort news clips in class realted to current events. One of the uses of YouTube that I really like is for online group discussion. I like to have groups of students watch a short video clip (which can be embedded in the discussion question) and related the objectives for the unit to the video they have watched. I find online discussions to ...be a lot more lively and interactive by incorporating a video clip from YouTube or Ustream.
